A Wine Lover’s Tale: Exploring Umbria and Montepulciano

Let me take you on a delightful journey through the enchanting landscapes of Umbria and Montepulciano.

Umbria: Montefalco - Arnaldo Caprai

Nestled amidst rolling hills and bathed in golden sunlight, Arnaldo Caprai stands as a testament to the timeless art of winemaking. As we approached the estate, the view unfolded - a canvas of vineyards stretching towards the horizon. For someone who once swore by Alto Adige and Trento, Umbria’s allure was undeniable.

Underrated Elegance:

Umbria, often overshadowed by its Tuscan neighbour, boasts an underrated wine region. Here, the vines yield treasures - bold reds and delicate whites - that dance harmoniously with the landscape. Arnaldo Caprai, a family-owned gem, has roots that run deep, spanning centuries. Eleonora and Viviane, our gracious hosts, welcomed us into their vinous haven.

The Tasting:

In the heart of the vineyard and winery, along with Marco Caprai, we tasted from a line-up that whispered tales of sun-soaked grapes. Grecante, with its mineral and citrus notes, danced on our palates. Sauvignon Blanc sang of crisp mornings, and Montefalco Rosso - a symphony of red fruits - left us spellbound.

Montefalco's Charms:

A short drive led us to Montefalco, a village wrapped in history. Cobbled streets beckoned, and at l’Alchemista, we feasted. The balance was exquisite -the atmosphere, the food, the wine - all conspiring to create magic. And on Montefalco’s streets, a Negroni awaited, a secret shared by locals.

A Hidden Museum:

In Montefalco’s museum, time folded. A church from the 1330s cradled a secret: the first winery, hidden beneath its ancient stones. A legacy dating back to the 1600s, whispered by the wines themselves.

Maria Stella’s Passion:

Montepulciano welcomed us with open arms. Poliziano, another family affair, bore witness to Maria Stella Carletti’s devotion. As the youngest winemaker in the lineage, she wove her knowledge into every grape. Passion flowed like wine, and Margherita, her partner in hospitality, guided us through the vine-clad labyrinth.

Lunch at Poliziano:

At the heart of the estate, we dined. The sun kissed our glasses, and the flavours danced—a symphony of local produce. Poliziano, our refuge, whispered tales of centuries past.

La Dogana’s Starlit Feast:

La Dogana, a culinary haven, awaited. Boet Berendsen, chef and owner, conjured magic. A tasting menu, tailored for our senses, unfolded. Michelin stars seemed inevitable. And what a sunset it was…

A Toast to Italy:

As the sun dipped, we raised our glasses. Umbria and Montepulciano had woven their magic. Two days and a lifetime of memories. Our guests departed, hearts full, and we vowed to return - to the vineyards, the villages, and the soul-stirring Italy.

And so, dear reader, our journey ends, but the taste of Umbria and Montepulciano lingers - a symphony of grapes, laughter, and sunsets.
