Small parcel of Frederic Magnien Morey-St-Denis Clos Sorbè 1er cru 2019

"This month I would like to draw your attention to a small parcel of Frederic Magnien’s Morey-St-Denis Clos Sorbè 1er Cru we have available.

Frederic is fifth generation winemaker of the Magnien family. He joined the family domaine in 1987 working alongside his father, vigneron Michel Magnien, until 1991. He then went abroad to gain experience from Pinot Noir experts, Josh Jensen in California and Garry Farr in Australia. In 1993 he re-joined his father at the family estate and two years later established his own negoce label while still being in charge of the running of the family domaine.

Fruit for the best ‘Frederic Magnien’ labels is sourced from the finest vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, and Morey-Saint-Denis. This is mainly from old vines and, predominantly, from organic and biodynamic growers.

Clos Sorbè 1er Cru is sourced from the eponymous three-hectare vineyard plot, situated between Les Sorbès and Le Clos Baulet in Morey-St-Denis. The vines are east facing and the soil dominated by clay and limestone marl. Frederic Magnien’s wines are aged in a combination of used oak barrels and clay amphorae.

These are modern wines with enormous fruit purity but also plenty of depth and structure. The neutral ageing vessels allows the fruit to take centre stage. 2019 has great fruit concentration, suave velvety texture and crisp balancing freshness.
